Don't Crack those Nuts! What not to do with your Teeth!

Your family dentist in Toronto may not spend a lot of time stressing this but there are a lot of common place activities that should be avoided to keep teeth healthy. It is really common sense but if a person doesn't stop to think before they act the results to teeth can be disastrous.

Firstly, a nut cracker can be purchased for a few dollars but broken teeth can cost a great deal to repair. In fact in some cases they might not even be fixable. This goes for a lot of other silly activities. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Teeth are not bottle openers or musical instruments. Sticky candy and taffy will cause any number of expensive tooth repairs to become necessary. This is especially the case when previous repairs are inadvertently removed.

Caramel apples can pull loose veneers off. Chewy fruit flavored candy can pull a cap off. Gum is never a good idea for those who wear braces. Sesame seeds can get wedged under dentures. Worst of all, beverage bottles can damage front teeth when too much of a good thing mixes with talk and laughter.

No one realizes that any given day is going to be the day that a hockey game goes bad or golden glove boxing gets particularly violent. Sports safety gear must always be taken seriously. Mouth guards are required for very good reasons.

But even the most careful mothers who constantly caution their children to not abuse their teeth can sometimes go wrong. The temptation to open packaging on any number of household products with one's teeth sometimes gets the best of us. Resist the urge to tear open a sample or letter with teeth! Take the time to locate a pair of scissors or letter opener.

Always think before you act. Corn on the cob might be for some but not all. Popcorn balls can scrape enamel and any food that is stale may be better thrown out if dental damage can result from eating it. Hard croutons or pretzels may be more trouble than they are worth.

The harm doesn't end with food choices or accidents. There is also a risk from eating utensils used incorrectly. Serving spoons are too large to eat from and knives are never to be used as forks. Some children and even adults have a habit of biting down on a utensil while eating. This should be avoided.

If tooth grinding is a problem get a dentist's help before damage occurs. Also be certain that over the counter tooth polish isn't being over used. Some of these are actually too abrasive for regular use. Even a hard bristle tooth brush can damage enamel as well as gum tissue.

Whitening teeth repeatedly may not be the best approach. Simply avoiding foods and beverages that stain teeth may be as good an idea as any. Tea is a particular culprit but so are coffee, wine and any number of other deep color foods.

Sometimes a good defense is the best offense.
