The Rising Price of Dentistry

Three and a half decades ago there were rumors circulating that gasoline would soon reach $.80 per gallon.  Gasoline was around $.34 per gallon and Americans panicked for the first time over the effect of double digit inflation on their driving habits.

Similarly 30 years ago a nice house in a good school district could be found for $30,000. We complained as a group about the outrageous housing prices.

How does the rising price of dental care affect a visit to a San Antonio dentist?

Well, simply put, it is a good buy.  Compared to the overall inflation rate there seems to be a brighter economic picture on the dental scene.  For one thing the dental health dollar buys more than it could have at any price back when we could all afford gas guzzling engines in our cars.

Improved products and methods of preventive dental care are available.  Sealant use in children alone has prevented many children from painful and expensive cavity treatments. When early diagnosis does reveal caries special calcium and phosphorous treatments can remineralize tooth enamel in some cases.

Then if major cavity removal is necessary painless dental techniques and equipment have made the process a much less disturbing treatment. Although   introduced in the 1960's new white fillings are stronger and can be used in back teeth as well as front teeth. A much more cosmetic affect can now be achieved over the old silver amalgam so that the tooth can function and look as good as new.

A whole range of cosmetic options are more available and most of them yield better results than they could have years ago.  With a few appointments a lovely new smile can be accomplished.

Today's adults who sidestepped the feared medieval ordeal of orthodontics in their youth are now reconsidering. Quite a few of them are happily returning to the orthodontist's office because of the many improved options.

Braces can be located behind the teeth or anchored with tooth matching porcelain. Removable, clear, plastic molds can be used to straighten teeth. Decades ago that would have seemed like nothing short of science fiction.

Dental insurance costs and availability are the real issue in dental costs.  There was in the past very limited availability and little flexibility in dental insurance. Most people a few decades ago only had dental insurance if it was offered through their employer.

Now there are many local and national discounts or supplemental plans available with options to meet the needs of every consumer. For less than a few hundred dollars a year a family can get at least a limited dental plan.  Many dentists offer specialized payment plans as well to cover the rest of the required care.

Be sure to look into the new economical dental plans on the market.  When doing so don't forget to check with your family dentist and see which plans he or she will accept.

With all of the many ways to pay and the improved care available even the rising costs of care shouldn't keep those San Antonio dentists away.
